»  Lawyers who use "in-your-face" advertising

The more advertising that a law firm does, the more likely that the law firm is focused on the business of law rather than the practice of law. Clients of those firms are more likely to be diligently billed than well-represented. After all, advertising costs money. Big money. As in any consumer transaction, a hard sell is usually designed to market an inferior product. The primary focus of the lawyers at BBW is on service to clients. We get paid for what we do, but that is not why we do it. Most of our clients come to us by way of referrals from other clients, and from lawyers who know us and respect the services we provide.

»  Lawyers who promise satisfaction

Any lawyer who promises favorable results is probably more interested in getting your money than in serving your interests. Any honest lawyer knows that it is extremely rare for any party to be completely satisfied -- there is always something that might have gone better. Lawyers who practice any particular type of law for many years may be able to predict a range of possible outcomes (which is what we do at BBW), but there are too many variables and too many people involved in any legal process for a lawyer to make any sort of a promise. It is understandable that someone seeking legal help may want a lawyer who is enthusiastic about their case, but a lawyer who is enthusiastic is probably either greedy or inexperienced. Clients are better served by a lawyer who realistically and dispassionately discusses all the favorable and unfavorable possibilities; and who exhibits appropriate optimism tempered by appropriate concern. Often, the best thing to do with a bad fact is to get it out and deal with it immediately. Such candor may disarm the opponent; and judges tend to appreciate and to look favorably upon the lawyer and the client who are forthright.
